Vidya Balan has blamed demonetisation for Kahaani 2's bad box office business. The actress stated that people didn't watch the film in theatres because of the same reason.
Vidya Balan's film Kahaani was not just critically acclaimed, but it was also a commercial success. The film fared extremely well at the box office. On the contrary, the second installment of the film opened to mixed response from the critics and the audiences. Recently, in an interview, Vidya Balan mentioned Kahaani 2 would have drawn more audiences to cinemas, if it were not for demonetisation. Kahaani 2 was released on December 2, 2016, which was less than a month after the Indian government announced demonetisation of Rs 500 and Rs 1000 banknotes.
In an interview with Bollywood Hungama, Vidya Balan was asked about the one film of hers she wished more people watched in cinemas. While asking the question, the interviewer mentioned, "There was something that happened at that point of time, around that release." To this, Vidya added, "Demonetisation, so people didn't go to the theatres."
The actress went on to add, "I don't know if they (the audience) would have (gone to the theatre) otherwise, but it's comforting that there's an excuse." While Kahaani 2 didn't work well, Vidya Balan earned the Best Actress award at a prestigious award function for Kahaani.
Meanwhile, Vidya Balan is currently riding high on the success of her recently released film, Jalsa. The film was released on March 18, 2022, on Amazon Prime Video. Directed by Suresh Triveni, Jalsa is an investigative thriller that also features Shefali Shah in a pivotal role. While Vidya plays the role of a journalist, Shefali essays the role of her cook, whose daughter gets hurt in a hit-and-run accident.
