IPL media rights auction: BCCI secretary Jay Shah on Tuesday, June 14 confirmed that the total value of the media rights for the 2023-27 cycle for Rs 48,390 crore, an unprecedented figure in the Indian sports broadcasting industry.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to earn Rs 48,390 crore from the sale of IPL 2023-27 media rights after the 3-day auction in Mumbai. The figure of Rs 48,390 crore, an unprecedented number in Indian sports broadcast industry, is nearly 3 times the price (Rs 16,347.50 crore) at which the richest cricket board sold the media rights for the previous cycle (2018-22) in 2017, highlighting the value of the brand IPL that has exceeded expectations in terms of its growth.
In a stunning validation of the market buzz that digital is the future, the digital rights was sold for a cumulative amount of Rs 23,758 crore while the TV rights for the Indian subcontinent were sold for Rs 23, 575 crore for 410 matches over a period of 5 years, which amounts to Rs 57.40 crore per match.
Notably, Disney Star retained the TV rights while Viacom18 bagged the digital rights for the Indian subcontinent for a whopping sum of Rs 20,500 crore which amounts to Rs 50 crore per match.
"Since its inception, the IPL has been synonymous with growth & today is a red-letter day for India Cricket, with Brand IPL touching a new high with e-auction resulting in INR 48,390 cr value. IPL is now the 2nd most valued sporting league in the world in terms of per match value!" BCCI secretary Jay Shah said.

The value of digital rights shot up over the TV rights when Viacom18 bid aggressively in a battle with Disney Star for a special package, which had a non-inclusive set of 18 matches per season. Viacom18 won the rights for the said package with a bid of Rs 33.24 crore, which amounts to Rs 3,258 crore for 98 matches in the 2023-27 cycle.
Put together, the value of the digital rights for the IPL broadcast stood at Rs 23, 758 crore - a stunning figure which reiterates the growing demand for digital content and the penetration of the internet in the country.
