The jury in the trial of former "Empire" star Jussie Smollett has reached a verdict. Smollett is charged with six counts of disorderly conduct under a subsection of the law that prohibits false reports to police.
The verdict, which is expected to be announced in court shortly, is the culmination of nearly two years of controversy surrounding the actor and the hate crime he says occurred in January 2019.
The jury of six men and six women was tasked with determining whether Smollett lied to police about the alleged crime. Smollett, who is Black and gay, said two men beat him, yelled "racist and homophobic slurs," dumped an "unknown chemical substance" on him and put a noose around his neck while he was walking to Walgreens late at night in Chicago.
