India registered more than 29,000 cases of murder in 2020, showing a marginal increase of 1.0 per cent over a year. Here's an analysis of the murder cases registered across the country last year, the motive behind the thousands of murders and the age group which fell victim to these murders.
Across 28 states, eight Union Territories - home to 1.3 billion people, more than 42,54,300 incidents were recorded as crimes under various sections of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) last year, revealed the data released by the National Crime Records Bureau (NCRB). Overall, 66,01,285 cognisable crimes were recorded in India.
The NCRB data released last week showed that in 2020, a Covid-19 pandemic year, India registered more than 29,000 cases of murder, as many as 84,805 cases of kidnapping and abduction, 50,035 cyber crime cases and a total of 1,45,754 cases pertaining to economic offences.
