Yadgir district headquarters is dependent on various places, including Kalaburagi, for supply of vegetables after most of the local farmers stopped growing vegetables due to various reasons, including labour shortage.
The prices of vegetables, particularly onion, have gone up in Yadgir owing to a shortage in supply. Presently, the price of onion per kilogram ranges from ₹80 to ₹100 based on the quality.
The prices of other vegetables, like cucumber, beans, carrot, brinjal, cluster beans, bitter gourd, acorns, beetroot, ladies finger, and tomato, are between ₹60 and ₹80 per kg.
“Due to the short supply of all vegetables, more particularly onions, the prices have risen. We are getting onions from Solapur after a shortage in the Kalaburagi market. The price of onion will possibly not come down till the end of February, or until local produce arrives in the market,” Moin, a vegetable vendor, told The Hindu.

“The hike in onion and other vegetable prices will directly hit middle-class families, which are already facing difficulties in buying other essential commodities,” said Shivaleela, a housewife.
