Apart from Marathi and Hindi songs, late singer Lata Mangeshkar also sang songs in Tamil. Valai Osai and Aarao are two of her iconic numbers.
Lata Mangeshkar's demise on February 6 left the entire country in a state of grief. She died at the Breach Candy Hospital in Mumbai after being treated for Covid-19 and other age-related illnesses. Apart from singing in Hindi and Marathi, Lata Mangeshkar also sang in Tamil. Kamal Haasan's Valai Osai and Prabhu's Aararo are some of the evergreen songs that Lata Mangeshkar rendered.
Lata Mangeshkar's mellifluous voice and songs will live as long as there's Indian music. She had rendered songs in thirty-six Indian languages and foreign languages as well. Some of her hit songs in Tamil are still in vogue.
Reportedly, she made her Tamil debut in 1952. It is said that she had sung a few songs in Aan Murattu Adiyaal, which is a Tamil dubbed film. Izhanden Unnai Anbe, Nagaru Nagaru, Paadu Singara Paadalai and Indru Endhan Nenjil are some of the songs she sang in the film.

In 1955, Dilip Kumar's Uran Kathola was remade in Tamil as Vanaratham. In the Hindi version, all nine songs were sung by Lata Mangeshkar and Mohammad Rafi. In the Tamil remake, Lata Mangeshkar sang the Enthan Kannalan song, which had lyrics written by Kambadasan. Naushad composed the music for Vanaratham.
After 1955, Lata Mangeshkar concentrated on Hindi, Marathi and other languages.
It was Ilaiyaraaja who brought back Lata Mangeshkar to the Tamil film industry. In 1987, Ilaiyaraaja roped in Lata for Prabhu and Radha's Anand. She sang the iconic Aararo Aararo song. This is her first direct Tamil song.
