In a major relief to over 1 crore domestic consumers, the Uttar Pradesh Electricity Regulatory Commission has reduced electricity tariffs from 50 paise to Re 1 in almost all slabs in both urban and rural areas. Announced on July 23, the new electricity rates are implemented from Thursday.

The state government has abolished the slab of Rs 7 per unit and the maximum rate of domestic electricity has been fixed at Rs 6.50 per unit.
According to the new rates, for spending more than 300 units of electricity, a maximum of Rs 6.50 will have to be paid per unit. From 151 to 300 units, electricity will be available at the rate of Rs 6, 101 to 150 units at the rate of Rs 5.50 per unit. Meanwhile, domestic BPL electricity will be available at the rate of Rs 3 per unit.
The electricity rates in Greater Noida have been reduced by about 10 percent.
