USWNT vs. Netherlands player ratings: Alyssa Naeher gets perfect grade for keeping USA alive in Tokyo Olympics
CBSN
Let's rate some USWNT performances after the quarterfinal against the Netherlands
The United States women's national team advanced to the Olympic semifinals on penalty kicks against the Netherlands. Vivanne Miedema scored for Netherlands in regulation while Lynn Williams and Sam Mewis recorded goals over 90 minutes for Team USA. Alyssa Naeher made three penalty kick saves, one in regulation and two during shootout, while Rose Lavelle, Christen Press, Alex Morgan, and Megan Rapinoe converted their penalties to advance 4-2 over the Netherlands. Alyssa Naeher (GK) 120 Good positioning and distribution during the game. Conceded two goals, including a questionable moment on the second goal from Miedema. However, was a huge factor in maintaining and reigniting momentum for the team on a penalty-kick save late in the game. Came up with, not one, but two fantastic penalty saves during the shootout. A different outcome for the team if she's not in goal. 10 Kelley O'Hara (DEF) 120 Made her return to the lineup after some player rotation kept her out of the previous game. She was active on the flank and closed down space during regulation as the team returned their high press. Gave up a dangerous penalty late in regulation and was bailed out by Naeher and understandably faded deep into extra time. 5 Becky Sauerbrunn (DEF) 120 Slotted back into the defensive line after player rotation in the previous match. Helped keep the defense organized and did well to help distribute out of the back when needed, but had dangerous moments as she tried to position herself against the lethal Miedema. 6.5 Abby Dahlkemper (DEF) 120 Slotted back into the back line after getting a rest day in the previous match. Didn't have the best marking on the opening goal from Miedema, and had some questionable moments throughout the 120 minutes. 5 Crystal Dunn (DEF) 120 Fourth consecutive start for Dunn in the Olympics. She was active in the counter press while making good defensive recoveries throughout the match especially during extra time making overlapping runs for Rapinoe along the flank. 7 Sam Mewis (MID) 57 Had her best game of the Olympics thus far. Key figure in the midfield for the team as she combined well in the attack and had the opening goal in regulation. 7.5 Julie Ertz (MID) 120 Got another start and went the full 120 in this one, again solidifying her place as an essential mainstay in the XI. Had a role in playing connector and disruptor throughout the game connecting with the back line and the ever-changing rotated front line. 7.5 Lindsey Horan (MID) 120 Didn't make her presence felt initially alongside big games from Mewis and Ertz, but somehow was more active and really turned things on the pitch during extra time for the team. 6.5 Lynn Williams (FWD) 57 Made her first Olympic start and was active from the opening whistle, directly attacking the opposition's back line and dominating the wing. Recorded the assist on Mewis' goal and recorded the go-ahead goal ahead of halftime in regulation. 7.5 Carli Lloyd (FWD) 57 Despite taking time getting into the game, she had good movement off the ball as Williams and Heath worked the wings, but didn't make the most of her time on the pitch to finish opportunities. 6 Tobin Heath (FWD) 64 Got the start up top with Williams and Lloyd and combined well on the flank in the team's high press with Dunn and others. Almost had the opening goal, but timing on her run kept her offside. 7 Rose Lavelle Mewis (63 mins.) She was able to play higher in the attack. Connected well with Press and Morgan, and opened the pitch up for Horan to get more involved in play as well. Converted her penalty kick during the shootout. 7.5 Christen Press Williams (63 mins.) She had a quick impact off the bench, navigating the top line with Morgan and Rapinoe. Helped swing back momentum during stretches of the second half and extra time. Like many others on the team, she also had a goal called back for offside, but converted her penalty kick during the shootout. 7.5 Alex Morgan Lloyd (63 mins.) She became an immediate target for her team while creating space for teammates as Dutch defenders tried to mark her. Nearly broke through on goal off a defensive error but was ruled offside. Converted her penalty kick during the shootout. 7.5 Megan Rapinoe Heath (56 mins.) She earned some set pieces for the team, but had poor service during the closing stretches of the game. Struggled defensively as the game went on, but converted the winning penalty kick to seal the shootout win. 6.5 Vlatko Andonovski 4 Rolled out his fourth different starting XI (4-3-3) and made rotational subs to his initial lineup once again. Made a good decision to start Lynn Williams and had the team playing in a familiar tempo and an effective high press. Made four substitutions in the game in an effort to lock things up in regulation, and despite needing penalties to determine a place in the semifinal, the team finally looks like a familiar USWNT that people are used to watching. 7 Let's take a look at our player and coach ratings from the U.S. perspective. Ratings are based on 1-10 scale with a 1 representing an early red card send off and a 10 is a hat-trick level type of game, or in this case -- a three penalty saves type of game.
