US will not abandon Taiwan, says Nancy Pelosi

US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi told Taiwan's President Tsai Ing-wen that the United States will not abandon Taiwan.
US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, speaking at Taiwan's presidential office, told Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen that she came to Taiwan to make unequivocally clear that the US “will not abandon Taiwan.” Pelosi’s statement came amid China’s criticism of her visit.
Nancy Pelosi, who is on her Taiwan visit, met President Tsai Ing-wen on Wednesday, August 3, at the presidential office.
Pelosi also said now more than ever, America's solidarity with Taiwan is “crucial” and that's the message she is delivering today.
Praising the country’s democracy, Pelosi said, “Taiwan is a flourishing democracy. It has proven to the world that hope, courage and determination can build a peaceful and prosperous future despite the challenges it faces”.
“Today, the world faces a choice between democracy and autocracy. America's determination to preserve democracy here in Taiwan and in the world remains iron-clad”, said Pelosi during a meeting with President Tsai.
She also lauded Taiwan for its management of the Covid pandemic and said, “You are a model to the world”.
Pelosi mentioned the three pillars of her travel, “global security, economics and governance”.
