Coimbatore city plans to widen Uppilipalayam flyover road to reduce traffic congestion and accidents, pending NH approval.
A stretch of road around the roundabout on Uppilipalayam flyover (Avinashi Road old flyover) in Coimbatore city is likely to be widened to ease traffic congestion on the flyover and to reduce accident risks.
District Collector Kranthi Kumar Pati said the special projects team would take up interim widening works and the overall widening of the flyover would be taken up by the National Highways (NH) wing of the State Highways Department.
The Collector told The Hindu that this was discussed with the Divisional Engineer of the NH wing in Coimbatore recently and would be taken up at the next meeting of the District Road Safety Committee.
Officials in various wings of the Highways Department said the ramp coming up the flyover from Krishnaswamy Road and the stretch till the ramp towards Goodsheds road was where traffic congestion happened frequently. This stretch around the roundabout should be widened and a proposal was given for ₹60 lakh - ₹70 lakh. This could be taken up by the special projects team that was executing the Avinashi Road flyover now. However, the NH wing of the Department should give no objection consent for this work.
The NH wing was preparing a detailed project report and would submit it to the Central government for widening the ramps too on the flyover. However, this work would take time, the officials said.
