In an interesting turn of events, unidentified thieves returned precious idols made of 'Ashtadhatu' which they had stolen a week ago from the Balaji temple in Uttar Pradesh's Chitrakoot. Not only this, but the thieves also left behind a confession note saying that they were haunted by nightmares ever since the theft, and hence were returning the idols, further seeking forgiveness.
The matter came to light when Mahant Ram Balak Das, priest of the Balaji temple built inside Jai Devdas Akhara, in Tarouha town (Chitrakoot district) lodged a complaint with the police stating that 16 idols worth lakhs, including a 5 kg idol of Shri Ram made of Ashtadhatu, was stolen from the temple.
It was on May 9, that the priest's wife reached the temple in the morning only to find that the lock of the temple was broken and the idols kept inside were missing.
Based on the complaint, police registered a case and launched an investigation into the matter.
However, the case took an interesting turn after Mahant found a sack filled with the stolen idols in front of his house in Mahavir Nagar only a week after the theft.
Along with the stolen idols, he also noticed a letter purportedly written by the thieves regretting their act and seeking forgiveness.
In a letter addressed to the temple priest, the thieves claimed that they were having nightmares and were not able to sleep. Hence, they were returning the idols. They even requested the priest to get the idols installed again in the temple.
