UP govt bans sale of liquor around temples in Ayodhya, Mathura

The Uttar Pradesh government has announced a ban on the sale of liquor around temples in Ayodhya and Mathura. The government has cancelled the licenses of liquor shop owners in Ayodhya and around 37 alcohol shops will shut down in Mathura startting today.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has imposed a complete ban on the sale of liquor in areas around temples in Ayodhya and Mathura. The Uttar Pradesh government has ordered a ban on the sale of liquor in areas close to Ram Mandir in Ayodhya and Krishna Janmabhoomi in Mathura. The government has also cancelled the licences of alcohol shop owners in Ayodhya.
The order comes into immediate effect from June 1, 2022, Wednesday and the government has ordered the shut down of at least 37 shops of beer, alcohol and bhang in areas surrounding the temples in Mathura.
The Yogi Adityanath government has cancelled the licences of liquor shop owners located around Ram Mandhir in Ayodhya. The state government suggested that traders could take up selling milk and revive the industry in Mathura, known for producing huge quantities of animal milk.
Around three bars located in hotels and two model shops will also remain closed in Mathura from Wednesday. Last year, Yogi Adityanath had imposed a complete ban on the sale of liquor and meat in Mathura.
In September 2021, the state government had declared a 10 square km area of Mathura-Vrindavan as a pilgrimage site, adding that no sale of liquor and meat will be allowed in this area. The chief minister had made this announcement while speaking at the Krishnotsava 2021 programme.
Earlier, he had announced a ban on liquor shops and the sale of non-vegetarian food at all places of worship, such as Varanasi, Vrindavan, Ayodhya, Chitrakoot, Deoband, Dewa Sharif, Misrikh-Naimisharanya.
