UP: 19-year-old girl kills self after family forces her to leave education for marriage

A 19-year-old girl died by suicide in Etawah after her family pressurised her to give up her education for marriage. A class 12 student, the victim wanted to complete her education before getting married.

A 19-year-old girl died by suicide after her family finalised her marriage without her consent in the middle of her education in Uttar Pradesh’s Etawah. Torn between her own dream to pursue education and her family’s pressure to get married, the girl hung herself from the ceiling in her house.

Priyanka, a resident of Kashiram Colony, had to start Class 12 this year but her family started looking for a boy for her marriage. Even after several pleas to let her complete studying and not get her married, her family finalised her wedding behind her back.

Police have sent her body for a post mortem and started an investigation into the matter.

Priyanka was the eldest of six siblings, two brothers and four sisters. Her father worked as a labourer to support the family.
