Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that the Uniform Civil Code should be implemented in India in the interest of Muslim women.
Amid the debate on implementation of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) in India, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said on Sunday that it should be done in "the greater interest of our Muslim women".
He said that if the UCC is not implemented in India, 'polygamy system' will continue and men will be able to marry multiple times, thereby curtailing the fundamental rights of women.
"If Uniform Civil Code doesn't get implemented, polygamy system will continue; a man will marry 3-4 times, curtailing the fundamental rights of a woman. Uniform Civil Code should be implemented for the greater interest of our Muslim women," the BJP leader was quoted as saying by ANI news agency.
The Uniform Civil Code, which comes under Article 44 of the Constitution of India, proposes to introduce personal laws that would apply to all citizens equally, irrespective of their religion, gender, caste, etc.
Uniform Civil Code essentially refers to a common set of laws governing personal matters such as marriage, divorce, adoption, inheritance, and succession.
At present, the personal laws of various communities are largely governed by their religion.
Last week, the All India Muslim Personal Law Board (AIMPLB) called attempts by various state governments and the Centre to introduce a Uniform Civil Code in India “an unconstitutional and anti-minorities move”.
