The farmer who spent Rs 5 lakh on cultivation had to bear a huge loss, due to which he decided to destroy the tomatoes grown on four acres of land.
Unable to make a decent profit, a 41-year-old farmer destroyed tomatoes grown on four acres of land in Allalapuram, Tamil Nadu on Saturday.
Sivakumar said that he spent nearly Rs 1.5 lakh on sowing the seeds, fertilising the field, paying workers for plucking the fruit and then loading tomatoes into the cargo vehicle. After paying for all this, tomatoes were only sold for Rs 5 per kg, which meant he would have to spend much more money from his pocket.
Sivakumar also said that if the government could intervene and procure the tomatoes for at least Rs 15 per kilo, farmers like him could survive.
This incident took place on the same day when State Agriculture Minister MRK Panneerselvan tabled the Agriculture budget promising to uplift the agriculture sector in Tamil Nadu.
