In an op-ed criticizing Texas' new restrictive abortion law, actress Uma Thurman revealed Tuesday that she had an abortion as a teenager, saying it has been her "darkest secret until now."
The new Texas law, the most restrictive measure in the U.S., bans abortions as early as six weeks of pregnancy, before most women know that they are pregnant. It also allows private citizens to sue abortion providers or anyone who helps someone get an abortion for at least $10,000. Victims of rape and incest are not excluded from the law's restrictions.
In the few weeks that the law has been active, some Texas residents have fled across state lines to be able to access the procedure elsewhere.
A class of drugs known as GLP-1s have been helping people lose weight, but out of pocket costs put them out of reach for many Americans. In West Virginia, a subsidy program for public employees was showing promising results, but then the state abruptly ended it, leaving many searching for new solutions.
