Ukraine fired mortars at Russian territory, says official

Kursk Oblast Governor Roman Starovoyt claimed that a border crossing located several kilometres away from Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast was shelled by the Ukrainian military on April 9.
A Russian regional officer has accused Ukraine of firing mortars at Kursk region bordering the eastern European country, the latest in a series of allegations by Moscow of Ukrainian attacks on its territory.
According to a report by the Kyiv Independent, Kursk Oblast Governor Roman Starovoyt claimed that a border crossing in Elizavetovka, located several kilometres away from Ukraine’s Sumy Oblast, was shelled on April 9.
Earlier this week, Starovoyt alleged that Russian border guards in Kursk came under fire from the Ukrainian side, while schools in nearby Belgorod were evacuated after a bomb threat.
Prior to that, Russia accused Ukrainian military helicopters of carrying out an air strike against a fuel depot in Belgorod, one of Moscow's main logistics hubs for its military campaign in Ukraine. A senior Ukrainian official denied responsibility for the attack.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy has asserted that Kyiv is ready for a tough battle with Russian forces amassing in the east of the country, while maintaining that avenues of a diplomatic resolution with Moscow are always open.
"This will be a hard battle, we believe in this fight and our victory. We are ready to simultaneously fight and look for diplomatic ways to put an end to this war," Zelenskyy said.
His statement came a day after more than 50 people were killed in a missile strike on a train station in city of Kramatorsk in the Donetsk region, where thousands of people had gathered to evacuate.
