UK and Spain crackdown on misleading cryptocurrency advertisements, will India do it next?
India Today
Both the UK and Spain have made public, their decision to bring cryptocurrency advertisements under regulation. The former will hold them to the same standards as other investments like stocks, while the latter will monitor the content and have all such ads carry a warning to investors.
Spain and UK are ready to bring laws that crackdown on misleading advertisements around cryptocurrency investments, which may cause crypto investors to lose money. Sharing their plans, the UK government noted that it will bring forward the legislation "once parliamentary time allows," while Spain will put the new guidelines into effect from February 17.
Announcing the new regulation on Monday, Spain's National Securities Market Commission stated that all crypto ads will have to warn investors that "Investments in crypto-assets are not regulated" and that all of the investors' money could be lost. The UK government followed up on Tuesday with a decision to bring such crypto asset promotions "within the scope of financial promotions legislation." This means that such endorsements will have to abide by the laws laid down in the UK for other investment solutions, examples being stocks and insurance.
