The NIA has taken over the investigation into the beheading of shopkeeper Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan’s Udaipur and lodged a case under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act. Here are the top developments in the case.
The National Investigation Agency (NIA) has been given charge of the probe into the beheading of shopkeeper Kanhaiya Lal in Rajasthan’s Udaipur. After taking over the case, the anti-terror agency registered an FIR and began questioning the two accused jointly with the SIT formed by the Rajasthan Police.
Meanwhile, curfew was in force in Udaipur and internet services also remained suspended after sporadic violence in the wake of the grisly murder. However, many people came out onto the city streets to join the funeral procession of the victim.
The Ministry of Home Affairs directed the NIA to take over the investigation into the Udaipur tailor’s murder. After the four-member team landed in Jaipur, it conducted a preliminary probe before lodging an FIR under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act as well as various sections of the Indian Penal Code.
Intelligence sources told India Today that the murder of a Hindu tailor in Udaipur was a terror act carried out by the sleeper cell of a Pakistan-based radical outfit. It has also emerged that the two accused, Mohammad Riaz and Ghouse Mohammad, have links to Dawat-e-Islami, a religious movement based in Pakistan.
