Harsha’s father had alleged that Muslim miscreants murdered his son because he was a Bajrang Dal activist. Harsha was murdered on February 20 and an FIR was filed based on the father’s complaint.
Protests that erupted in Shivamogga over Harsha's death took a violent turn as protesters began to pelt stones, brandish weapons and even set vehicles ablaze. To ensure that the situation did not get out of hand, police had to resort to using tear gas to disperse the crowd.
