U.S. senator to visit Alberta oil sands in a bid that could pressure Biden

A key Democratic senator will tour Canada's oil sands next week, the site of a critical pipeline project U.S. President Joe Biden scrapped on his first day in office.
Joe Manchin, chair of the Senate Committee on Energy and Natural Resources, plans to visit two sites in Fort McMurray, Alta., and discuss "North American energy security and how Alberta can provide more of the U.S.' energy needs," according to officials.
Frank Macchiarola with the American Petroleum Institute says the trip could pressure Biden to reconsider the move.
"What Sen. Manchin is saying is energy security is important for the United States," Macchiarola said. "This provides, at least, the administration with the opportunity to rethink what they did."
Manchin's office tells CTV News they "will have a full release following Senator Manchin’s visit, but not before."
