Tyler Perry delivered a rousing acceptance speech at the 93rd annual Academy Awards on Sunday night, calling for people to "refuse hate."
After being introduced by actress Viola Davis, the "Madea" series director received the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award for feeding and helping people during the pandemic. In his speech, the 51-year-old entertainment mogul recalled how his own homeless past served as motivation to help others and brought up how his mother taught him to refuse hate and "blanket judgment." "It is my hope that all of us will teach our kids—and not only to remember—just refuse hate," he said. "Don't hate anybody. I refuse to hate someone because they're Mexican or because they are Black or white, or LGBTQ. I refuse to hate someone because they're a police officer. I refuse to hate someone because they are Asian. I would hope that we would refuse hate."
