Two candidates for political office in the Mexican city of Celaya have died following a shooting, in the latest violence to mar the run-up to the country’s looming general election. Bertha Gisela Gaytán, a mayoral candidate for Celaya, died on Monday after being shot while campaigning in the community of San Miguel Octopan, the Guanajuato state prosecutor’s office said, describing her death as an assassination. Three other people were also injured in the attack, including a candidate for Celaya’s city council Adrián Guerrero. Mexico’s Secretary of Federal Public Security Rosa Icela Rodríguez confirmed on Tuesday that Guerrero had later died from his injuries. Authorities said investigators and forensic experts were at the scene collecting information to track the killers. The deaths are the latest in a spate of killings that have taken place in the run-up to Mexico’s general election, which is expected to be held on June 2. Gaytán had been campaigning for Morena, the party of Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
