The Island Lake RCMP is investigating the drowning deaths of two children in Manitoba.
The first investigation began on June 15 around 4 p.m., when Island Lake officers were called to a nursing station for the report of a drowning.
According to police, a 23-month-old boy was found in the lake outside his home in Garden Hill First Nation. The child was brought to the nursing station and then taken to Winnipeg.
Police note the boy was in the care of older siblings at the time of the drowning.
The child died from his injuries on June 18.
The second, unrelated investigation began on June 18 around 7:15 p.m. when Mounties were called to a drowning in St. Theresa Point First Nation.
According to police, a group of kids was swimming when two 10-year-old girls swam out too far and started to struggle. Both girls went under the water, but a bystander managed to pull one to safety. She was taken to the nursing station and has recovered.
