Decision taken after discussions with checking inspectors
The Transport Department has directed the State Express Transport Corporation (SETC) to keep two berths exclusively for women passengers.
As per the directions, the SETC has issued a circular of allotting separate berths in sleeper buses in both air conditioned (AC) and non air conditioned (non-AC) coaches. A senior official said since the sleeper coaches in SETC buses had no exclusive seats for women. So, it was proposed to have two seats for women.
Based on the discussion with the SETC checking inspectors at a meeting chaired by Principal Secretary K. Gopal, directions were issued to allot two sleeper berths for women. Arrangements have been made in the booking software for this.
Already separate seats are allotted for persons with disabilities and women in buses and now this facility had been extended to sleeper buses. As per the new arrangements, seats for women are allotted in seat No. 1 and 4 in both AC and non-AC buses.
Seats for women could be allotted for general category only in case of both the seats not being booked.
