The Pentagon removed a portrait of retired Gen. Mark Milley that hung with paintings of other former chairs of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, just hours after President Donald Trump was sworn in on Tuesday, The New York Times reported.
A U.S. official told the newspaper that the White House ordered the takedown.
CNN shared a photo of the empty wall space where Milley’s portrait hung, along with an image of how it looked when it was installed on Jan. 10. Milley retired from the post in 2023.
The Times called the removal “unprecedented” given that the chair of the joint chiefs of staff is considered an apolitical job.
But perhaps the move shouldn’t surprise anyone. Trump and/or his associates may have been reacting to Biden’s pre-emptive pardon of Milley before Trump’s inauguration.
