Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder hybrid SUV unveiled, bookings open
India Today
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder is an all-new SUV for the Indian market that comes with petrol mild hybrid and strong hybrid engine options, manual and automatic transmission variants and will also be offered in both front wheel drive and all wheel drive variants.
The Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder has been unveiled to take on the likes of the Hyundai Creta, Kia Seltos, VW Taigun and Skoda Kushaq. While the price of the Hyryder has not been revealed, bookings are now open and its launch is expected to take place in August 2022.
The Hyryder sports a split headlamp and tail lamp setup. It gets LED lighting up front and an LED tail lamp signature. Toyota will offer the upcoming SUV with 17-inch alloy wheels and dual-tone colour options. In terms of size, the Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder measures 4,365mm in length, 1,795mm in width and 1,635mm in height. It has a wheelbase of 2,600mm.
Inside the cabin, the Toyota Hyryder SUV boasts features like a digital instrument cluster, a 9-inch infotainment screen, automatic climate control, wireless charger, ventilated front seats, head-up display, rear aircon vent, reclining rear seat, auto-dimming IRVM and much more. The features list also includes Toyota i-Connet connected car features including location based info, remote engine start and AC control. There's also a 360-degree camera view on offer and a panoramic sunroof. There are no electrically adjustable seats on offer though.
The biggest talking point is easily the strong hybrid powertrain the Toyota Urban Cruiser will be offered with. An electric motor combines a 1.5-litre petrol engine to deliver a combined system output of 116bhp. The engine has a power and torque rating of 92bhp and 122Nm respectively, while the motor has an output of 80bhp and 141Nm. Power is sent to the front wheels via an automatic gearbox. The other option is a 1.5-litre K-Series naturally aspirated petrol engine borrowed from Maruti Suzuki with mild-hybrid tech. It produces 102bhp and 135Nm paired with either a 5-speed manual or a 6-speed automatic. This variant will be the one that will also get the option of an all wheel drive (AWD) setup. The Hyryder hybrid variant is front wheel drive only. Exact fuel efficiency figures haven't been shared.
Speaking about the segment and Urban Cruiser Hyryder, Tadashi Asazuma Executive Vice President, Sales & Customer Service, Toyota Kirloskar Motor said, “At Toyota, we always bring in models based on our studies on consumer preferences and industry trends. The Urban Cruiser Hyryder, the first of its kind Self-charging Strong Hybrid Electric Vehicle in the segment, is aimed at delivering exemplary performance, best in class fuel efficiency, quick acceleration, and a smooth drive. Over the years, Toyota’s share has grown substantially in the SUV segments. The dominance of our premium offerings like the segment leading Toyota Fortuner, the Legender, and good acceptance of the Urban Cruiser are due to their bold and sophisticated styling backed by design inspired by Toyota’s global SUV lineage. We are confident that the Urban Cruiser Hyryder will create substantial excitement and further reinstate our presence in the coveted B-SUV segment in India with its several best in segment features like the AWD (All Wheel Drive), Panoramic sunroof, 17” alloy, wireless charger, Heads Up Display (HUD) & 360-degree camera and connected DCM (Data Communication Module) making it the ideal choice of all the automobile enthusiasts.”
Toyota Urban Cruiser Hyryder bookings are now open and can be made with a Rs 25,000 deposit. Expect Toyota to announce prices in August 2022. The Hyryder hybrid variant is likely to cost around Rs 20 lakh, while the mild hybrid variants will obviously be cheaper.
