Tortured in police custody 20 years ago, human rights activist still awaits compensation

In 2013, human rights activist Sarabjit Singh Verka was granted compensation by a court after it was found that he was tortured in custody of Punjab Police.
Amritsar-based human rights activist Sarabjit Singh Verka is still awaiting the compensation which was granted to him by a district court two decades ago. A former principal investigator with Punjab Human Rights organisation, Sarabjit Singh Verka was booked under various sections of the IPC, Arms Act and TADA by the Amritsar Police on February 10, 1992. Sarabjit Singh Verka was released on bail in 1998. He along with the other accused were acquitted by the court on May 23, 2000. The police had also registered another case against Sarabjit Singh Verka under similar charges in 1998. He was finally acquitted in these cases in March 2007.More Related News
