Periyasamy, a BJP candidate in Coimbatore, has been accused of providing freebies like rosaries and candles especially to cover Christian voters for the upcoming urban local body elections in Tamil Nadu.
A BJP candidate in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore, contesting in the urban local body elections, has been accused of giving silver-coated plates, saffron and green candles and rosaries to garner voters.
Periyasamy, contesting from the 8th ward in Karumathampatti, is being accused of providing freebies, including rosaries, to cover Christian votes in the area. The urban local body polls are scheduled to be held on February 19 and the results will be announced on February 22.
This incident comes at a time when several allegations have arisen about candidates resorting to illegal practises of giving money or various objects to lure voters in Tamil Nadu.
However, Periyasamy is facing criticism, as he allegedly gave rosaries and other items specifically to cover Christian voters.
This comes at a time when the BJP in Tamil Nadu is campaigning against forced religious conversion, especially targeting Christian missionaries, highlighting the death of a school girl in Thanjavur.
