The Tamil Nadu Assembly, on Friday, April 29, passed a resolution urging the Centre to permit the Tamil Nadu government to send relief materials like food and medicines to Sri Lanka.
Chief Minister MK Stalin, in the assembly, said that the state government would send 40,000 tonnes of rice to Sri Lanka.
The government has decided to help all the people in Sri Lanka affected now, and not just Lankan Tamils, which was the earlier suggestion made by the state.
Last month, MK Stalin sought the necessary clearances, but the Centre is yet to respond to the same.
The current crisis in Sri Lanka is caused in part by a lack of foreign currency, which has meant that the country cannot afford to pay for imports of staple foods and fuel, leading to acute shortages and very high prices.
