A St. John's photographer's picture of Labrador's Torngat Mountains National Park is now headed across Canada on new stamp from Canada Post.
Michael Winsor's photo of the Saglek fjords on the Labrador Peninsula is part of Canada Post's From Far and Wide series, which showcases landscapes across the country. The fourth instalment was launched this week.
"It's pretty cool," Winsor told CBC News. "It's quite the remarkable, kind of, scene that we saw there that day."
Winsor took the photo during a 2015 trip to Labrador with as the subject of an episode of CBC's Land and Sea. He remembers the day as a windy and rainy evening that led to a shaky helicopter ride, but the stars aligned for a perfect shot.
"When we actually made the turn, I remember looking out the right side window, and the sun broke through the clouds. And it was just magic. It was something special. It's one of those pictures that when you actually take the picture, you just kind of know right away that you captured something special," he said.
This isn't the first time Winsor's work has been featured by Canada Post. His 2017 photo of an iceberg in Ferryland was featured on international stamps in 2019, and he said he's kept up a good working relationship with Canada Post since.
Canada Post originally contacted him asking about another photo he had taken, he said, but he knew the photo of Torngat Mountains would be great for the new series.
"When I kind of discovered that the theme is actually far and wide, I said, 'Well, let me show you this picture, because there ain't no other place in Canada that's more further or wider,'" he said.
"It's a place of spirits and, you know, it's just kind of a place that captures your soul."
Winsor said he's excited for his work to show off Labrador, a part of the province he says doesn't get as much recognition as it should in tourism campaigns.
Winsor said his next big goal to take landscape photography in Antarctica.
