You have probably always wanted to know how the co-founders and CEOs of the big tech companies lead their lives. Former Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and former Microsoft co-founder Bill Gates do the dishes every night before sleeping, they do not resort to conventional ways like meditation, yoga and other methods to switch off from work. Now if you are wondering why, despite being the richest people in the world, they do the dishes every night, that is because it is therapeutic for them.
“I do the dishes every night. I’m pretty convinced it’s the sexiest thing I do,” Bezos had said during an interview in 2014. When Gates was asked during a Reddit AMA, “What is something you enjoy doing that you think no one would expect from you?” Gates had said, “I do the dishes every night — other people volunteer, but I like the way I do it.”
He said that it helped him clear his mind. There are a lot of things that would help you ease your anxiety or lead to a peaceful sleep, but what Bezos and Gates do is rather unique. People mostly read a book and meditate, but Bezos and Gates find it soothing to scrub plates.
Gates had revealed that other than washing the dishes, he also reads a book before falling asleep. "I read for an hour almost every night. It's part of falling asleep," Gates told The Seattle Times.
While you might look at washing dishes as a mundane chore, there are great benefits associated with the whole process. A test was conducted by Florida State University which showed a decrease in stress levels in students who were asked to wash dishes while focusing on their breath. “We hypothesized that, relative to a control condition, participants receiving mindful dishwashing instruction would evidence greater state mindfulness, attentional awareness, and positive effects, as well as reduce negative affect and lead to overestimations of time spent dishwashing. A sample of 51 college students engaged in either a mindful or control dishwashing practice before completing measures of mindfulness, affect, and experiential recall,” the report read.
This might seem like the most boring thing that one could do, but always remember that you get great ideas only when you are engaged in a tax that is not mentally taxing. At least, that is what these super successful people from the tech industry believe in.
