Karnataka minister JC Madhuswamy said that action will be taken against those involved in the alleged assault of Muslim fruit vendors outside a temple in the state. He said the act of "publically humiliating" someone was "uncivilised" and "wrong".
Karnataka Law Minister JC Madhuswamy said on Monday that action will be taken against those who allegedly assaulted Muslim fruit vendors outside a temple in Karnataka's Dharwad city. He called the act "uncivilised" and said that "everyone has the right to do trade".
"This is uncivilised. Do we know that every day something or another will happen? After it happens, we need to find a solution for it...A few people are engaging in notoriety," Madhuswamy said.
"If someone, somewhere does some notoriety, how do you suppose that the government will react immediately? Now that it has been brought to our notice, we will take action. We will take action on those who commit such acts," Madhuswamy said.
Madhuswamy also said that "publicly humiliating or boycotting is wrong" and that everyone has the right to do trade.
"What they are doing is wrong. Everyone has a constitutional right to live in this country. Similarly, everyone has the right to do trade," Madhuswamy said.
"Worshipping is a private right. In the confines of their homes, they can follow what they want. Publicly humiliating or boycotting someone is wrong and our constitution does not support it. It is wrong. We will control all of it," Madhuswamy said.
Muslim fruit vendors were reportedly harassed outside a Hanuman temple in Karnataka's Dharwad city by members of the Sri Ram Sene group, who overturned the carts and threw the fruits on the road.
