Kapil Dev's unbeaten 175 off 138 balls took India from 17/5 to 266/8 and helped them beat Zimbabwe by 31 runs in the quarter-finals of the 1983 World Cup.
June 25, 1983 has become an iconic date in the history of Indian cricket. It was the day when India, who were the rank underdogs in the 1983 World Cup, beat a much more fancied West Indies to win the tournament for the first time ever. However, that moment would never have come had it not been for a freakish innings from captain Kapil Dev in the quarter-finals against Zimbabwe. Kapil had chosen to bat first at the Nevill Ground in Tunbridge Well after winning the toss. India soon lost their top four in Sunil Gavaskar, K Srikkanth, Mohinder Amarnath and Sandeep Patil for just nine runs as they struggled to deal with Zimbabwe fast bowlers Peter Rawson and Kevin Curran, father of England all-rounders Tom and Sam Curran.More Related News
