The dignitaries garlanded the statue of Thiruvalluvar near the New Bus Stand.
Speaker R. Selvam, Ministers, Deputy Speaker of the Legislative Assembly P. Rajavelu, and MLAs were present.
Meanwhile, Leader of Opposition R. Siva led the celebrations — that also coincide with Pongal-Tamil New Year —organised by the DMK in Puducherry with floral tributes to the portrait of Thiruvalluvar at the party office and unveiling a statue near the bus terminal. Former Speaker SP Sivakumar, and MLAs V. Annibal Kennedy and R. Senthilkumar were among those who participated.
