The 2023 White House Holiday Display featured its first-ever Advent calendar, including new, high-resolution images taken from the James Webb Space Telescope.
"[W]e can now see how the dying star absolutely shattered when it exploded, leaving filaments akin to tiny shards of glass behind," said Purdue University Associate Professor of Physics and Astronomy Danny Milisavljevic, who leads the JWST research team. "It’s really unbelievable after all these years studying Cas A to now resolve those details, which are providing us with transformational insight into how this star exploded." Megan Myers is an associate producer/writer with Fox News Digital Originals.
The Cas A supernova remnant is 11,000 light-years away in the constellation Cassiopeia and is estimated to have exploded about 340 years ago, according to NASA.
