The dark side of AI: Here's how the tech can be used for scams, fraud

It can be hard to deny that AI tools such as ChatGPT have plenty of creative and practical uses. But the technology may have just as much potential for harm as it does for progress, writes columnist Christopher Liew. Here are some of the ways AI can be used for scams, fraud, and other malicious activity.
When OpenAI launched the ground-breaking tool ChatGPT in November 2022, it changed the world forever, showing the artificial intelligence revolution is truly upon us. The application of AI has contributed to a number of technological advancements, such as the development of modern computer chips, generative media, and more.
Not everybody is excited about AI, though. Some may see it as a two-sided coin that has just as much potential for harm as it does for progress.
Today, almost everyone I know uses AI for one reason or another. If the technology becomes fully integrated into online search engines, queries such as, “What kind of vacuum cleaner should I buy?” or “Plan a trip to Mexico with a budget of $3,000,” could be met with an AI-generated answer. Microsoft’s Bing search engine has been testing this feature with users since February.
These integrated AI systems may also have a similar disclaimer – AI is experimental and could generate inaccurate information.
Despite this, AI has become a useful tool for many. From graphic designers who quickly want to edit designs, to writers looking for creative titles and AI-scheduling programs, it’s hard to deny that AI has a lot of creative and practical uses.
But when used improperly or for the wrong reasons, it can have disastrous consequences.
Just take the example of the two lawyers who used ChatGPT for legal research while preparing a court filing. Both ended up citing past court cases that were completely made up.
