The Thames Valley District School Board will receive $9.2 million in funding from the Ontario government to further expand Eagle Heights Public School.
The Ministry of Education approved the tender to provide space for an additional 300 students, along with renovations to increase the school's library and administration area, the board announced Friday.
"Thames Valley District School Board is grateful to the Ministry of Education for supporting the Eagle Heights Public School expansion project," said Mark Fisher, director of Education.
The elementary school, which has students from kindergarten to Grade 8, was originally built for 680 students. Due to London's rapid growth in recent years, it currently accommodates more than 1,000 students, and requires 18 portable classrooms.
"This much-needed renovation will help address enrolment pressure facing schools in West London due to unprecedented growth in the city," Fisher said.
The school board held public sessions to inform the community about the architectural designs for the project last year.
"The funding for a new addition and internal renovations at Eagle Heights Public School in London is great news for our community," said Rob Flack, MPP for Elgin-Middlesex-London. "This investment will ensure families and students have access to a quality learning environment in the years ahead."
The project is estimated to finish up by January 2025, pending Ministry and municipal approvals.
"As one of the fastest growing communities in the board, we look forward to welcoming new families and introducing them to the many unique programs we offer in Thames Valley," said Fisher.
