TGSRTC increases special buses for Sankranti rush, catering to high demand for travel within Telangana and Andhra Pradesh.
This Sankranti holiday season, the Telangana State Road Transport Corporation (TGSRTC) ramped up its efforts to cater to the festive passenger rush by pressing into service a higher number of special buses. According to TGSRTC officials, the transport behemoth had pressed 5,246 special buses into service during last year’s Sankranti season. However, this year, the figure rose to 5,725 buses, so as to accommodate the heightened demand for travel during the festive period.
As in previous years, the TGSRTC deployed 300 buses per day from the Greater Hyderabad Zone’s fleet to manage passenger traffic. The primary travel routes were within Telangana and towards Andhra Pradesh, resulting in relatively lower passenger movement within Hyderabad city itself. However, this shift in bus allocation caused inconvenience for some commuters travelling within the city, who found their options limited due to the reduced number of buses operating within city routes.
The intra-State routes experienced a significant rush, particularly towards destinations such as Karimnagar, Warangal, Mahbubnagar, Nalgonda and Khammam. Similarly, the demand for buses travelling from Hyderabad to Andhra Pradesh was high. Heavy passenger movement was recorded to cities like Vijayawada, Visakhapatnam, Amalapuram, Ongole and Kandukur.
TGSRTC officials are also bracing for further spikes in passenger activity, especially on January 16. Additionally, January 19, a Sunday, and January 20 also are expected to witness high traffic volumes, as people return from their festive travels.
