Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has backed Ajax manager Erik Ten Hag, who he worked with at Bayern Munich, to be his successor as the manager of the club in the future. Ten Hag has been linked with the Manchester United job this summer.
Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola said Ajax Amsterdam manager Erik ten Hag could be a strong candidate to succeed him in the dugout of Cityzens. Guardiola says Ten Hag has the track record to be a future Man City manager.
Erik Ten Hag is one of the hottest managerial properties this season, and is definitely in the running to be one of the top managers in the future of football.
Ten Hag worked with Pep Guardiola at Bayern Munich, as in charge of the second team, and has come a long way into his managerial career so far, leading Ajax to win the Eredivisie this season. So his philosophy matches with that of Guardiola’s Cruyffian football, playing possession, high pressing, attacking, and attractive modern-day football.
Ajax also had an impressive UEFA Champions League run during the 2018-19 campaign, losing to Tottenham Hotspur in the semi-finals, knocking out Real Madrid and Juventus in the process. He also won the league title in 2019 and 2021, and they are two points ahead of PSV Eindhoven in the Eredivisie.
When asked about Ten Hag replacing the Spaniard, he said, "Could Erik ten Hag be here at City? Definitely. I think he could be the one," Guardiola told British media on Friday. "For the way he approaches the game, definitely."
"For his qualities, just take a look at his Ajax team in the last few years," Guardiola said.
"It is a joy to watch and in many games, not just the year they got to the Champions League semi-final, but with little details they would have reached that final."
