Telangana student dies by suicide, feared arrest for participating in Agnipath protest

A student in Telangana was found dead by police at the ghats of the river Godavari. Police said it is likely that he died by suicide by jumping into the river.
Telangana Police on Friday said they recovered a man’s body near the Godavari ghats, adding that it is likely that he died by suicide by jumping into the Godavari river.
The student’s father told the police that he took part in the Agnipath protests that were held at the Secunderabad railway station where trains were burnt and destroyed. The father added that he was scared that he would be arrested for the protests and was unable to concentrate on his studies.
A case has been registered in the matter and the body has been sent for an autopsy.

Protests broke out across the country in June against the central government’s Agnipath scheme. The Centre unveiled the Agnipath scheme that will allow youngsters aged 17.5 to 21 to be inducted into any of the three services of the Army as “agniveers” for a period of four years.
Protests against the new military recruitment scheme turned violent in states like Bihar, Uttar Pradesh and Telangana as agitated youth vandalised railway properties and set trains on fire.
