The Madras High Court on Thursday granted bail to stunt choreographer from Tamil Nadu Kanal Kannan, who was arrested after delivering a provocative speech. He had called for the demolition of the Periyar statue located outside Sri Ranganatha temple Srirangam.
Justice GK Ilanthiraiyan of Madras HC granted bail to Kanal Kannan on the condition that he should appear before the investigating officer twice a day for four weeks.
The court has also asked the stunt director to file an affidavit stating that he shall avoid such speeches.
Kannal Kannan, a famous Kollywood stunt director was arrested by the cybercrime wing of Chennai Police based on a complaint given by Thanthai Periyar Dravidar Kazhagam.
He was booked under sections 153 and 505 (1) (b). Kanal Kannan, who is the president of the art and culture wing of Hindu Munnani, in a recent speech sought the dismantling of the Periyar statue outside Sri Ranganatha temple Srirangam.
“Nearly a lakh Hindus worship at Sri Ranganathar temple every day. But opposite the temple, there is a statue of someone who said that there is no god. The day when that statue is broken will be the day we Hindus will rise,” Kanal Kannan said.
The life-size bronze statue of rationalist leader and founder of Dravidar Kazhagam (DK) Periyar E V Ramasamy Naicker, popularly known as Periyar, was installed in 2006.
