Tamil Nadu: Salem Police arrests 24-year-old man for having links to ISIS

Ashik, a 24-year-old man from Tamil Nadu’s Salem, was arrested by the police for having links to terror outfit ISIS. He was initially picked up by the Intelligence Bureau and Q Branch, who, after questioning him, handed him over to Salem Police.
A 24-year-old man with suspected ISIS links, working in a silverware factory owned by his relative, was arrested by the Salem Police in Tamil Nadu. The accused, Ashik from Pallipatti in Dharmapuri district, was arrested on Saturday, July 30, by Salem Police.
Though police sources state that the arrest was the outcome of suspicion about Ashik’s movements, the Intelligence Bureau and Q Branch were involved in the identification and arrest of the accused.
Ashik was initially picked up by IB and Q Branch officials, who had questioned him for several hours, and after collecting valuable information, handed him over to the Salem Police.
A case under Sections 121, 122, and 125 of the Indian Penal Code (IPC) and 18, 18A, 20, 38 and 39 of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA) has been filed against Ashik.
Sources stated that Ashik came into contact with ISIS members through social media and that he was paid for recruiting men. He was further told to be ready for terror attacks when the time came.
Salem Police have confiscated Ashik’s laptop and cellphone. They have also created special teams to identify if any other culprits are also involved.
