‘Swachh Andhra - Swachh Diwas’ is an attempt to keep towns, villages clean, says Chief Secretary. The State government has planned 10 programmes for proper management of waste, says Vijayanand.
The TDP-led NDA government in the State is taking special measures to keep towns and villages clean, and it is towards this goal that it has planned to organise ‘Swachh Andhra - Swachh Diwas’ on the third Saturday of every month, says Chief Secretary K. Vijayanand.
Participating in the programme at Katuru of Vuyyuru mandal in Krishna district on January 18, 2025 (Saturday), Mr. Vijayanand said the State government planned 10 programmes for the proper management of waste.
District Collector D.K. Balaji, Joint Collector Gitanjali Sharma, Penamaluru MLA Bode Prasad and others joined him in the activities, which included cleaning of roads, de-silting of drainages, and raising awareness among the public about the importance of the programme.
In Gollapudi of NTR district, Vijayawada MP Kesineni Sivanath called for adoption of a plastic-free lifestyle. He said that Swachh Andhra was possible with the collective efforts of the public and officials, and added that it was high time people realised the threat posed by plastic.
NTR District Collector G. Lakshmisha, who participated in the programme along with Mylavaram MLA Vasantha Krishna Prasad, explained how irresponsible dumping of waste had left the drains clogged, causing stench and making it a breeding place for mosquitoes. He added that village and mandal-level officials should ensure that waste was carried to the dumping yards, and that the vehicles required for the purpose were in place.
The Collector, later, instructed the officials to take strict action against those dumping garbage in public places, and identify garbage-vulnerable points in the district through CCTV cameras. He said the officials should immediately issue notices to those businesses and hotels that had thrown waste on the road.
