A man who police say fled to Hungary after a Stoney Creek homicide last year is expected to appear in Hamilton court Thursday.
Hamilton police say investigators brought Oliver Karafa, 28, of Toronto, back to Hamilton Wednesday after an eight-month extradition process in Hungary.
Karafa and Yun (Lucy) Lu Li, 25, also of Toronto, face charges of murder and attempted murder.
Hamilton police say the pair went to eastern Europe fewer than 24 hours after Tyler Pratt, 39, was killed at an Arvin Avenue home around 7:15 p.m. on Feb. 28, 2021.
The pair are also charged with attempted murder after a 26-year-old woman was found seriously injured at the scene, police say. She has been released from hospital after "extensive treatment," police say, and continues to recover.
Karafa, who is Slovakian-Canadian, began an extradition hearing in July after Hungarian police arrested the pair. Authorities returned Li to Canada that same month.
"Hamilton Police Service recognizes all the efforts of our policing partners domestically and internationally — specifically, the Hungarian Fugitive Active Search Team (FAST), for the collective efforts that resulted in the arrest of these wanted individuals," police said in a media release.
