A man has been shot and killed by police following a stabbing incident in Scarborough.
Toronto police said they received reports at around 2:33 p.m. of a woman stabbed at a home near Midland Avenue and Kingston Road.
Police said the injuries were serious. The woman was taken to hospital to be treated where she is in stable condition.
In a press conference outside the home, Toronto police chief James Ramer said the suspect had died in hospital as a result of being shot.
"We were advised a suspect was in the house with a child," Ramer said. "Officers had an interaction with the suspect and he was shot."
Ramer said he did not know how many shots officers fired.
A child was in the home at the time, who was unharmed, police say.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked its mandate and is investigating the fatal shooting of the suspect.
"The SIU is going to investigate the incident, the interaction between the individual and police and at the same time we will investigate the original incident, the stabbing," Ramer said.
Responding to questions from members of the media, Ramer added that the incident was "tragic" and police will provide assistance to the family.
"It has a huge impact on the officers that are involved and the families that are involved," he said of the shooting.
In a statement released Saturday evening, the SIU said the suspect who was killed was 42 years old.
"The man, believed to be involved in injuring the woman and who had the knife, took hold of a young child and entered a residence," the statement said.
Three officers shot the man, the SIU said. He was taken to hospital where he died at 3:24 p.m.
