Summerside mayor moves to disqualify Coun. Barb Gallant

Following a third consecutive absence from Summerside council's monthly meeting on Monday, Summerside Mayor Dan Kutcher is asking the CAO to request P.E.I. Communities Minister Rob Lantz disqualify her from office.
Gallant was charged in April with theft over $5,000, in connection to her work with the Lest We Forget Veterans Committee.
Summerside officials had previously said any action against Gallant in connection with the charge would have to wait until the criminal matter is concluded.
The charge against Gallant has not been proven in court. She appeared in court last month, but asked for an adjournment to give her time to find a lawyer.
The Municipal Government Act allows for disqualification if a council member is absent for three consecutive meetings except in the case of illness or council approving a leave of absence.
At her first court appearance May 29, Gallant was scheduled to reappear in court June 19.
