A video has surfaced from Umaria district of Madhya Pradesh where school children can be clearly seen getting into the water to cross a narrow section of a river to reach school. The video is shot just 20 km from the Umaria district headquarters.
There is no bridge over the water for people to cross it and students had even stopped going to school during the monsoons when the drain was overflowing.
Now that the water has somewhat receded, the school students have resumed their path across the drain by having to descend into the water. The water is still high enough that it's knee-deep for the young students.
The viral video is raising concerns over the lives of the young children and questions as to why no step has been taken to rectify the situation.
In the Higher Secondary School located in village Sarswahi, just 20 km away from the district headquarters, students come from more than half a dozen villages including Majhgawan, Bartarai, Dadrodi, Kodar, Bardoha, Barbaspur, Kherwa, Sarswahi.
Due to the lack of a better route, the students coming from Kodar choose to cross this narrow section of the Baruha river, which can be potentially dangerous.
A bridge had been built on the Baruha river connecting village Sarswahi and Dadrodi but it was damaged several years ago and hadn't been fixed.
