Stuart Broad places Ben Stokes as England's next Test captain after Joe Root resignation

Broad is one of the most senior members of the squad, but has not found his place in the team regularly owing to England's combinational choices.
England veteran Stuart Broad has distanced himself from captaincy speculation after Joe Root decided to resign from his position in the Test team. Root, who has been at the helm since 2017, currently holds the most number of wins as an England captain (27). Root, regarded as one of the best long format batters in the modern era, has had a contentious time as a captain over the past couple of years and has a forgettable record of 26 losses - the most for an England captain.
Stuart Broad, in his column in the Daily Mail reflected on the tenure and praised him for how Root handled it without making a lot of fuss.
"For the last five years, I've noticed on days before Test matches start that when other players are off to relax with a cup of coffee or a game of golf, Joe has been in meeting after meeting or in this or that media session," revealed Broad.
Speaking about the next captain, Broad stated that he had not given captaincy any thought and there were better people available.
"Naturally, I am aware that my name has been touted as a potential successor to Joe as England captain and I guess that is because I am an experienced centrally contracted player who has been around the international game a long time," Broad explained his position on captaincy.
Broad put Ben Stokes' name in the hat, implying that he would be the next best person to take over from Root. Broad stated that Stokes was the only one relevant in the captaincy debate and the responsibility might well fall down on him.
"One of them is Joe Root, the other is Ben Stokes - and one of them isn't going to be captain for the first Test of the summer against New Zealand at Lord's on June 2 because he has just given the job away," Broad concluded on the matter.
