Tamil Nadu CM M.K. Stalin announces naming a street after late theatre artist S.V. Venkataraman in Mylapore.
A street in Mylapore in Chennai would be named after late theatre artist S.V. Venkataraman, father of playwright and actor S.Ve. Shekher, said Tamil Nadu Chief Minister M.K. Stalin on Monday. He made the announcement following a request by Mr. Shekher in this regard.
Referring to Mr. Shekher’s request, Mr. Stalin said a proposal would be made in the meeting at the Greater Chennai Corporation, and his request would be fulfilled. Venkataraman has been a theatre artist since the 1940s, and has also taught atTamil Nadu Film Institute, Mr. Stalin said. The Chief Minister witnessed the 7,000th play by Natakhapriya.
Mr. Stalin said that it was no surprise that he was taking part in a function organised by Mr. Shekher. He said that Mr. Shekher was affectionate towards former Chief Minister M. Karunanidhi and him. The affection was over art and not politics, he added.
Mr. Stalin also recalled Karunanidhi’s affection for Mr. Shekher. Even when Mr. Shekher was an AIADMK MLA, he met Karunanidhi in the Assembly hall, handed over a representation, which was immediately acted upon, Mr. Stalin said.
“When shifting parties, the colour of their flags could change. But, the colour of the people should not change. I could take the example of Mr. Shekher. He spoke his mind and criticise with boldness. And even now, you all know who is speaking about,” Mr. Stalin said.
The Chief Minister further said: “We saw certain scenes in this play. When we see this, we could just make use of him [Mr. Shekher] for the 2026 elections. ” Mr. Stalin also recalled plays Mr. Shekher was part of, even some plays which were 14 years ago.
Mr. Shekher would have met so many individuals and would have witnessed several competitions, Mr. Stalin said. “Even today, only he could criticise with boldness even if it was against those in the political party he is attached to. We are witnessing it on the social media,” he added.
